What is the Transport Manager CPC?
The Transport Manager CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is the qualification required by law for anyone nominated as a Transport Manager on a Standard National or Standard International operator licence. Without a qualified Transport Manager in post, a standard HGV operator licence cannot be granted or maintained.
Road Haulage CPC
Required for anyone nominated as Transport Manager on a Standard National or Standard International HGV operator licence. Covers operator licensing law, drivers' hours, tachographs, vehicle maintenance, financial management and transport operations.
PCV CPC
Required for Transport Managers on Standard licences for passenger-carrying vehicle operations. This is a separate qualification from the Goods Vehicle route — the two are not interchangeable. Choose the route that matches your operation.

What is the Transport Manager CPC and who is legally required to hold it? +
The Transport Manager CPC is the professional qualification required by law for anyone nominated as a Transport Manager on a Standard National or Standard International HGV operator licence. Without a qualified Transport Manager in post, a standard operator licence cannot be granted or maintained.
It is not required for restricted operator licences. If you operate on a restricted licence, OLAT (Operator Licence Awareness Training) is the more relevant course for directors and senior managers.
What is the difference between the Goods Vehicle and PCV Transport Manager CPC? +
The Goods Vehicle (Road Haulage) CPC qualifies you to be nominated as Transport Manager on a standard licence for HGV operations. The PCV (Passenger Commercial Vehicle) CPC qualifies you for passenger transport operations.
The two qualifications are separate and not interchangeable — you must sit the route that matches your operation. Transcom offers both routes through our home study packages.
How long does it take to get the Transport Manager CPC? +
The live online 5-day course takes five consecutive training days, after which you sit your exams. Home study typically takes 6 to 8 weeks of self-paced preparation.
Most candidates complete the full process — from starting a course to holding the qualification — within 2 to 4 months, depending on exam scheduling. See our 2026 exam dates guide to plan your timeline.
Can I book Transport Manager CPC exams without doing a course? +
Yes. If you have already studied and are ready to sit, you can book the multiple choice and case study exams independently through our exam booking page. Both exams together or individual units are available for Road Haulage and PCV routes.
If you want focused revision before sitting, our Exam Preparation Day (£94.99) gives you a structured live online revision session before the official assessments.
What is the difference between the Transport Manager CPC and OLAT? +
The Transport Manager CPC is a formal professional qualification required by law for nominated Transport Managers on Standard operator licences. OLAT (Operator Licence Awareness Training) is management-level compliance awareness training for directors, senior managers and restricted operator licence holders.
OLAT does not replace or substitute for the Transport Manager CPC. If you are unsure which you need, contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
What should I do once I have passed the Transport Manager CPC? +
Passing the CPC proves you know the law — but it does not prepare you for the real situations that arise in an active operation. Our New Transport Manager Course (£325 inc VAT) is a 2-day practical programme that bridges that gap, with a full policy and procedure template pack included.
For ongoing CPD once you are established in the role, the 2-Day Transport Manager Refresher (£160 inc VAT) keeps your knowledge current with Traffic Commissioner expectations — including maintenance oversight, brake testing evidence and OCRS.
